(Salvia hispanica and Salvia columbariae are the two main species of Salvia that are refered to as 'Chia'.
Chia plants (Salvia hispanica) is grown mainly for its seeds although the stems were also used to make baskets. Chia is regarded as being rich in Omega 3 and 6 as well as being a good source of fibre.
Growing Chia Plants
Chia plants are not difficult to grow and are resistant to insects and many other pests.
Chia seeds and plants are readily available. Salvia columbariae is known as 'Golden Chia'.
Is Chia worth growing at home, as a plant yes but as a food source?. Probably not unless you are really into growing your own everything.
It is probably easier to buy Chia seeds from a Health food store.
