How to grow plants from seed

The easiest plants to grow from seed are vegetables, it needs to be remembered that seeds need to planted at the appropriate time of the year to produce a succesful crop and some seeds are best started in pots or in a greenhouse situation while others are best planted directly into the vegetable garden.

Tomato seeds seem to benefit from being planted into pots and given time in a warm situation such as a greenhouse, cold frame or even a warm window sill before being planted into the garden as the weather and soil begin to warm. Carrots however seem to prefer to be planted directly into the garden during spring.

Remember that all vegetable seeds req uire a different treatment so carefully follow the instructions given. Look for fresh seeds that are properly packed and have a use by date.

Seeds that do not require to be planted directly into the ground can be started in pots in a sterile potting mix or specialist seed raising mix.

Seed growing kits that help control heat are available in a number of forms and will improve germination of most seeds.

Biodegradeable pots made from Coir, Coco Peat or paper are a great way to start growing seeds that will eventaully be transplanted into the garden.
