Peony plants are not difficult to grow in cooler areas. Peony prefer dappled shade or 'part shade', 4-6 hours of direct sun is enough and hot afternoon sun should be avoided, peony plants do well beneath large deciduous trees.
Peony come as two types, herbaceous peony, those that die back in winter, and tree peony which are small deciduous shrubs.
Paeonia lactiflora or 'Chinese peony', is an herbaceous species. The Chinese call the peony 'The King of Flowers'.
Tree Peony prefer a humus rich moist but well drained soil, plant peony a good distance from the base of a large tree so that they are not forced into competition with the tree roots for nutrients and moisture.
Over watering will kill Tree Peony Plants.
Fertilize tree peony every two weeks in the growing season, we prefer a seaweed based liquid fertilizer.
