Daffodil Bulbs and Flowers - Planting and Care

It is best to plant daffodil bulbs in the Fall once the soil has commenced to cool a little. Remember to plant Daffodils in a well drained position where they will receive plenty of sun in late winter and spring.

If planting daffodil bulbs in the ground, dig the ground over well and apply a low nitrogen fertilizer.

Plant daffodil bulbs 3 times as deep as the height of the bulb (usually around 5 inches or 12cm deep). In particularly heavy ground plant a little shallow.

If you are planting daffodil bulbs in a pot or container you may wish to plant them fairly close together, you may need to divide the bulbs more often, however close planting in containers can provide a better display. In the ground plant daffodil bulbs 2 inches apart and remember they will need to be divided as they get crowded.

Water bulbs well during active growth in the spring (although natural rainfall is often enough). Cut back on water as the foliage begins to die back.

Let the foliage of daffodil bulbs die right back after flowering, this returns energy to the bulb for the next seasons flowers. Remember to divide bulbs every 3-4 years as they tend to become overcrowded and flowering can be limited. Many growers add Sulphate of Potash to help promote flowering, all purpose bulb fertilizers are also satisfactory.
