Diospyros kaki - The Persimmon

Diospyros kaki

Diospyros kaki is a very attractive deciduous tree (to 30ft) with beautiful fall foliage.

Used both as an ornamental tree as well as for producing fruit Diospyros kaki will grow to form a dome shaped spreading canopy and can also provide some shade for other plants in the garden.

Plants can be espaliered of trained to a fan in smaller spaces.

Varieties include

  • Diospyros kaki Hachiya - Although fruit can be picked when hard it is astringent and it needs to soften before being eaten. Fruit is heart shaped and should be yellow when harvested.

  • Diospyros kaki Fuyu - With deep green glossy foliage the fruit slightly flatted in appearance and is firm when eaten and is non astringent. Fruit should be yellow when harvested. The fruit is an attractive addition when left on the tree after the leaves have fallen.

  • Diospyros kaki Maru - Astringent fruit but earlier fruiting than others. Fruit is a green to yellow when harvested.
