Haemanthus coccineus and other species |
||
Haemanthus coccineus (picture right) is also known as the 'blood lily' although not a lily at all. The flowers emerge in late summer before foliage and make a dramatic statement with their brilliant orange red colour that resemble a 'paint brush' or 'shaving brush'. Another drought tolerant bulb from South Africa Haemanthus coccineus sop well in poor soil although we grow ours in a large pot. The large flat leaves that follow are an added attraction. Plants can be grown from seed fairly easily. In the garden they require a sunny well drained position, this is one plant you will not need to water. Good drainage in winter is essential. |
