Haemanthus coccineus and other species

Haemanthus coccineus (picture right) is also known as the 'blood lily' although not a lily at all. The flowers emerge in late summer before foliage and make a dramatic statement with their brilliant orange red colour that resemble a 'paint brush' or 'shaving brush'.

Another drought tolerant bulb from South Africa Haemanthus coccineus sop well in poor soil although we grow ours in a large pot. The large flat leaves that follow are an added attraction.

Plants can be grown from seed fairly easily. In the garden they require a sunny well drained position, this is one plant you will not need to water. Good drainage in winter is essential.

Hemanthus Care and Growing Conditions

Haemanthus bulbs and plants are originally from South Africa, Namibia and surrounding areas. Colorful flowers and drought tolerant you will find Haemanthus culture relatively easy given plenty of sun and a well drained position. Haemanthus coccineus and Haemanthus albiflos are avaialble for sale from online Nurseries.

Haemanthus flower in late summer with bold flower heads pushing through before foliage. Haemanthus albiflos is very popular with its white flowers.

We find that Haemanthus are best grown in large pots, but are worth a place in the rock garden, a free draining potting mix is best and try not to over water.

All Haemanthus species have similar culture requirements. During dormancy do not water haemanthus at all. Haemanthus albiflos, is probably the easiest to grow followed by Haemanthus coccineus. The unusual Haemanthus sanguineus has leaves that sit flat on the ground.
