Magnolia Magnolia denudata 'Yellow River' is a popular cultivar. The Japanese Magnolias are deciduous forms with attractive flowers. MAGNOLIA TREE HISTORY AND FACT SHEET.

The Magnolia Tree has been around for 1000s of years and are a favorite fragrant flowering tree for the garden. Magnolias are becoming extinct in the wild, but in cultivation new varieties are being developed every year.

Southern Magnolia or Magnolia Grandiflora are also referred to as Bull Bay, Cucumber Tree, Lily Tree, Sweet Bay, Umbrella Plant, Umbrella Tree and Yulan Tree

Magnolia Little Gem along with Magnolia Kay Parris and Magnolia Teddy Bear trees and shrubs are three of the most popular Magnolias used for landscaping.

Charles Plumier named Magnolias after the french botanist Pierre Magnol. With over 210 species identified so far sadly Magnolias are becoming extinct in the wild, but in cultivation new varieties are being developed every year. The International Magnolia Society is a great source of information on Magnolias

Magnolia species may be evergreen or deciduous.

Evergreen magnolias include:

  • Magnolia virginiana, Magnolia gradiflora and Magnolia delavayi
  • Magnolia gradiflora will grow to 20 m
  • Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' growing to 6 m
  • New developments related to the populat 'Little Gem' include:
    Magnolia grandiflora 'Teddy Bear' growing to 10m
    Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris' growing to 6-9m
  • Magnolia delavayi which grows to about 8 metres is the Chinese evergreen Magnolia

 

A Few growing hints for Magnolias

  • Magnolias are slow growing, advanced specimens may be costly, but are worth the money.
  • Magnolias do not like frost or wind.
  • Magnolias prefer a moist soil.Deciduous magnolias can be fertilized in early spring.
  • Magnolias prefer a soil pH from 6.6 to 7.
