Vitex agnus-castus The Chaste Tree

Vitex agnus-castus, Chaste Tree or Chasteberry, is a small tree or large shrub that'll reach 15ft given time. This is a deciduous tree that is widely used in alternative medicine, however it also makes an attractive ornamental tree.

Often referred to as a herb, Vitex agnus-castus has nice purple flowers in spring, they do look a little like those of Salvia or Buddlia however they are help upright. When in full flower they cover the tree, very attractive and excellent for attracting birds and butterflies.

Palmate leaves and flowers on terminal spikes of new growth followed by a small seed capsule.

You can grow the plant as a large shrub if you wish, however we think is much better when pruned back annually to form a more compact bush.
