Tulipa stapfii is a beautiful dark red to crimson dwarf tulip from Iraq & Iran. Very upright habit. Closely related to T.stylosa with broader glaucous foliage it is named after Otto Stapf who spent much time collecting in Iran in the late 1800s.
The flowers are nicely cupped with a familiar deep purple to black patch in the center. Shorter stems than many.
Tulipa stapfii requires a well drained sunny position and a dry summer to grow well, try growing in pots or in the rock garden. It is a fairly easy species to grow.
