Phyllostachys nigra - Black Bamboo

Black Bamboo or Giant Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) is originally from Taiwan, China and Japan. Also known as Kuretake or Kurochiku (Kuro Chiku).

Growing to 40 -50ft in ideal conditions and with culms (stems) up to 4 inches this is a large growing majestic bamboo. (in cultivation usually much smaller) This bamboo may take 2-3 years to develop the real black colour that it is famous for.

Phyllostachys nigra is a fairly vigorous running bamboo and should be grown in containers or with an effective root control system to prevent it becoming invasive. New shoots are green but turn black.

Choose the right container.

Phyllostachys nigra will spread, so if you are looking at a screen, try a long narrow container. You will find that it will quickly spread along the container and in 2 years will have spread along the length of a 6ft container with proper care.

In smaller round containers, spread will be limited, this will also limit height.

It is best not to sit containers or pots on the ground. They should be on a hard [paved surface. Otherwise you will find that the bamboo makes its way out of the pot through the drainage holes and into your garden, or your neighbours garden.
